SCOPE ICT EXPO Press Conference
The SCOPE ICT EXPO 2nd Press Conference was held successfully today at Penang Chief Minister Office at Level 28 KOMTAR.
Below are the press conference statement by Chief Minister of Penang - YAB Lim Guan Eng
Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am delighted to call for this SCOPE ICT EXPO press conference on behalf of the Software Consortium of Penang (SCOPE) this morning.SCoPe is an alliance of Penang-based software companies with diverse product and service portfolios. SCoPe is also affiliated with key institutions of the Penang State Government, such as the Penang Development Corporation (PDC), Penang Skills Development Centre (PSDC), Collaborative Research & Resource Centre (CRRC) and Socio-economic & Environmental Research Institute (SERI).
The idea of organizing such an event was conceptualized in December 2008 during a SCOPE committee meeting where the committee members raised the issue of not being able to tap into local SMI and SME communities although Penang has been famous as the “silicon valley of the orient”. Many of the members have made inroads with their solutions in providing various information, communication and technology based solutions to Multi National Companies.
The Committee started the groundwork for the SCOPE ICT EXPO from January 2009 onwards with the aims of generating more business activities such as exhibitions, business matching activities and workshops. The main objective is to be able to help the Software Consortium Members as well as the local Penang SMI SME in getting more business exposures and more businesses.SCOPE ICT EXPO plans to achieve the objective to further enhance the vibrancy and dynamism of the software industry in Penang. Various companies, societies, companies, colleges, universities, individuals or divisions are invited to join the Penang-based software fraternity to further collaborate in producing innovative and best-in-class products for the local, regional and global consumer, commercial and industrial markets.
A lot of efforts have been put in to ensure the success of this very first SCOPE ICT EXPO. At first, the committee only targeted 20 exhibitors and 300 participants with 8 talks and workshops. Glad to say that the EXPO has received overwhelming response as all the 20 available exhibition booths and 8 talks / workshop sessions were taken up within 1 week of launching. Due to high demand, the committee extended the exhibition booths to 30 and added additional 3 speaking sessions.
In conjunction with this SCOPE ICT EXPO, there will be also a mini ICT Career fair. This ICT career fair serves as a platform for graduates and graduating students to further understand the requirements from the industries. This is also an initiative by SCOPE committee to assist members recruit new employees or internships candidates. Approximately 100 job vacancies from 10 different organisations will be made available during the ICT career fair.
The idea of organizing such business event was in-line with the Penang State Government strategies in growing Penang’s K-Economy, promoting the High Tech and the ICT industries of Penang. With the recent launching of Penang Wieless Island initiative by the Penang State Government, our Penang based SMI SME in ICT industry can also play a role in making the new Internet and Knowledge Base ecosystem and supply chain to become more complete.
With that, I thank everyone for attending today’s Press Conference.
YB Jeff Ooi will be speaking during the SCOPE ICT EXPO with the title “Penang Wireless I-Land (Island) ~ Updates and Opportunities”.
